Bit Reduction of grayscale 16u to 8u

Hello,

I am doing some simple bit reduction of grayscale images from 16u to 8u using ippiReduceBits...

However the resulting 8 bit images do not look very good at all.  What are the best parameters to set for achieving the best looking 8 bit converted grayscale images?
